Lost pets

11. Before you adopt

Before you adopt a pet in the first place, make sure that you're ready for all the responsibilities involved in keeping the pet healthy and safe throughout their entire life - over twenty years in some cases. The OSPCA has several factsheets outlining things you need to know before deciding to adopt different kinds of pets, for example:

The maximum number of pets allowed per household is regulated by each municipality. The number may vary depending on the type of pet: cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils etc. The number of adults in your household may be a factor too.

  • If you live in London, contact the London Animal Care Centre at (519) 685-1330 to find out how many of each kind of pet you can own.

  • If you live in Middlesex, contact the animal control agency or municipal office for your municipality, listed on the Middlesex County animal shelters page.

  • If you live in another municipality, contact your municipal office, or check the blue pages of your phone book under "Animal Services."
